Gabriel Zea, Flowering
Fading, and Falling of Leaves
2020
Oil on Canvas
20×32”
The painting layers in a wallpaper-like pattern the depictions of skulls, flowers, children frolicking and playing, all underneath a red glaze brushed on like flames. The composition is meant to work like a montage, framing moments of frivolity in between the austerity of death (skulls) and life (blooms), with the aggressive but luminous red glaze helping warp it all together. The hope is to flatten these moments together so that their transience can be frozen and better appreciated.
